У статті акцентується увага на зростаючій актуальності проблеми хронічного болю у всьому світі, наводяться дані про її розповсюдженість, навантаження на системи охорони здоров’я та рівень пов’язаних економічних витрат у різних країнах світу, висвітлюється місце хронічного болю у новій Міжнародній класифікації хвороб 11 перегляду, дається обґрунтування хронічного болю як окремого самостійного захворювання, аналізуються основні проблеми ефективного управління болем у світі та Україні, пропонуються конкретні кроки для їх вирішення.
