Abstract

Military surgeon, since 1888 — doctor of medicine at the Imperial University of St. Volodymyr (now Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv), since 1901 — Knight of the Order of St. Stanislav and other military awards of the Russian Empire Martyr Halyn in 1903 was appointed Acting Chief Physician of the Kyiv Military Hospital. In 1907 he participated in founding of the Ukrainian Scientific Society in Kyiv, since 1908 chairman of its naturally-medical section, and since 1911 — chairman of medical section, chairman of terminological commission on medicine. In 1917–1921 М. Halyn was a cornet general of sanitary corps of the Army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, at hetmanate in 1918 he managed the Terminological Commission of the Ministry of People’s Health and Guardianship, was a compiler of the first ukrainian medical dictionaries. In 1920 at soviet power his «Rosijsjko- ukrajinsjkyj medychnyj slovnyk» was published as separate edition. The known ukrainian figures were attracted to edite Halyn’s dictionary, that gave to it high scientific level, as professional so language, and confession of all Ukraine. Most lexicographic medical labours of 1920th years, among that there is the «Shkiljnyj medychnyj slovnyk (za Halynym)» by B. Aleksandrovsjkyj (Poltava, 1924); «Nomenklatura khorob (latynsjko- ukrajinsjki nazvy khorob ta rosijsjkyj pokazhchyk do nykh)» by O. Korchak-Chepurkivsjkyj (Kyjiv, 1927) and «Medychnyj rosijsjko-ukrajinsjkyj slovnyk» by Dr. V. Kysiljov (Odesa, 1928) were based on the terminological principles of М. Halyn. The medical dictionaries of 1920th years are often absent even in the large libraries of Ukraine. They were destroyed or hidden in the special storehouses, and the very few scientists saw the originals of them. М. Halyn had pride enough of place in the Russian Empire, but he chose the Ukrainian State. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the publication of the «Rosijsjko-ukrajinsjkyj medychnyj slovnyk» by Martyr Halyn should be respected himself and his approach to the creation of the ukrainian medical terms.
